Q: Working in the sex industry?
A: Then join the International Union of Sex Workers.
The IUSW campaigns for the rights of everyone who works in the sex industry. The IUSW GMB branch was established specifically for workers from the sex and adult entertainment industry and is open to everyone working in the sex industry – whether you work as an escort, in a massage parlour, a private flat, on the street, a shop selling adult videos, behind or in front of the camera making adult entertainment, a strip club or from home doing phone sex. If you consider yourself to be working in the sex industry, you can join regardless of immigration or taxation status
The IUSW is part of the GMB, one of the UK's biggest trade unions with over 600,000 members. We campaign for sex workers' rights at a local, national and international level - to decrease stigma and violence against sex workers, improve working conditions and create a clear and fair sex industry.
Through the GMB we offer a range of benefits to members, including free legal advice. It can be difficult to resolve problems at work like house fees, getting paid on time or legal issues on your own. As a union member, you have greater strength through a collective voice and can get assistance from a huge organisation that is dedicated to improving your working conditions.
The IUSW believes that all workers in every industry should be able to benefit from membership of a trade union. Recently the IUSW has;
- won the first ever unfair dismissal case in the sex industry
- supported a member who was the victim of a tabloid newspaper sting
- lobbied the Scottish Executive on proposed restrictions of lap dancing and prostitution
- run courses for migrant sex workers on legal and employment issues and
- launched xtalk: free English language classes for workers in the sex industry
The single most important benefit of joining the IUSW GMB Branch is that you will be part of a huge organisation which recognises the legitimacy of working in the sex industry, that is dedicated to campaigning for sex workers' rights, improving your working life, and offering practical assistance with both work and non-work matters.
Being part of a union is about strength in numbers.
Confidentiality
We understand that workers in the sex industry may have a need for confidentiality, and take this into account on our membership application form and payment options. You must live in UK but your nationality or immigration status does not matter. You do not need to provide proof of identity and can join using your professional name.
